Our Team
Matthew Smith, Owner
Matthew Smith began formally organizing piles of rocks in his hometown of Worcester, Massachusetts in 2002.
Permanently moving to Asheville in 2003 he apprenticed under Fred Lashley and especially Joe Roberts. Matthew started Stonesmith in 2005. Since then, with his dedicated and knowledgeable crew, he has provided high quality stonework services in and around Asheville.
When not laying or hammering on stones he goes rock climbing. At home he also has a beautiful wife (Candra) and son (Caleb).
Grant Turlington, Designer / Installer
Grant Turlington graduated with an Associates Degree from SCC in Pinehurst, NC with a focus on landscape gardening and design in 2003. He has had the pleasure of being involved in a wide range of projects with a large focus on water feature design and construction. In 2012 he switched his focus towards learning the principles of drystone and has worked ever since on incorporating these principles in to the landscape and the features that compose it.
In the Spring of 2014 he had the great privilege of building two extensive water features in the Sarah P. Duke Gardens’s Culberson Asiatic Arboretum; designed by Sadafumi Uchiyama, head curator for the Portland Japanese Garden in Oregon.
Today, Grant lives with his son, River, in Black Mountain, NC, a neighbor of Asheville. He found Matt Smith in the Fall of 2014 and has enjoyed working with him ever since.
Joel Derrick
Originally a South Dakota boy, Joel bounced around the world doing various jobs until only recently when he decided Asheville felt like home. When he’s not helping Matt and Grant with stone work, he enjoys exploring the Asheville area with his partner, going on hikes, tasting beers, hanging with good folk, practicing yoga, and jammin’ to some good live music.
